Easter Gifts – For when chocolate isn’t enough

Everyone loves Easter, don’t they? The egg hunts, the chocolate, the big Sunday dinner – what’s not to love? The custom of giving eggs at Easter stems from celebrating new life. Christians remember that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead, a miracle that showed life could win over death. For Christians, the egg is a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection, as when they are cracked open they stand for the empty tomb.

Many people now give gifts at Easter, making it somewhat of a Spring-Christmas. A time when we can give gifts, spend time with our family, and give thanks for our loved ones.  If you like the idea of treating someone special in your life this easter, we have a few small but special gift ideas for you…

For her…

TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45

untitledsg

The unveiling of the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 is, without doubt, the most exciting news to come out of Switzerland’s watch world in 2017… so far. The first version of this smartwatch was innovative, unique and – in all honesty – risky as TAG took a leap (with the helping-hand of Intel) into the growing industry of wearable technology; being the first major Swiss watch brand to do so. Well, they definitely landed on both feet, as the watch proved very successful and popular amongst both watch-wearers and technology-users, but how would the second generation fare?

The aesthetics of the original Connected, looking like a modern, Biver-inspired Carrera, provided a sense of comfortability; the weareruntitledgdfh feels-like and knows
-that he or she is wearing a TAG Heuer. This was an important factor that the brand considered, and one which was rightly carried through in the follow-up Connected watch. The next step, and the key to the new model’s name, was to add some sort of customisable option to the watch in order to connect it to the wearer. The configurable system of the Modular 45 means that you could order your very own personalised model, with the options of four different straps, different coloured cases, a ceramic or aluminium bezel, and you could even change the style of your lugs and buckle. (Check out Peter’s personal configuration below!) TAG Heuer has also revealed that it will be offering different component sets to purchase so that you could mix-and-match your Modular 45, however you like, with great ease. The fantastic engineering of the watch means you can variate the components, without the need of any tools, in a matter of seconds.

Another key difference between the new model and the old is that TAG Heuer can officially say that the Connected Modular 45 is Swiss Made, as it has been developed in their La Cheux-de-Fonds Manufacture in collaboration with a crack team of Intel’s technology experts. This gives a great presence of credibility to the smartwatch, as it is crafted alongside the brand’s mechanical masterpieces, such as the COSC-certified Heuer 02T tourbillon movement. This brings us on to another massive part of what the new Connected is all about: its ability to change between both computerised and mechanical – “traditional” – modules. The mechanical modules will include the very popular Calibre 5 movement and the slightly pricier Heuer 02T chronograph, meaning you can get the best-of-both-worlds dependingon your tastes and preferences.

The technology of the smuntitledartwatch has also improved substantially. In 2015, when the first Connected watch was revealed, there were relatively limited options in terms of dial styles and colours, especially when you compare it to the thirty which TAG has pre-loaded onto the new model. On top of this, the Modular 45 contains some all-new, exciting software called TAG Heuer Studio which essentially means that the wearer will be able to create and customise his or her own dials, with a range of layouts, colours and even pictures. Yet again, we see another example of how the brand has given this customisable, configurable and personal theme to the Connected Modular 45. The smartwatch is still going to be powered by the Android-Wear OS, meaning that it is compatible with almost every smartphone device, including the Apple iPhone; keeping you connected to all aspects of modern life. The faster processor inside the Modular 45 makes for a far snappier, more responsive and more advanced smartwatch than its predecessor, and with a minimum battery life of 25 hours (under normal usage) and a mere charging time of just 90 minutes, this watch is not only functional and stylish, but also practical.

The avant-garde name and nature of TAG Heuer is fantastically expressed by the creation of this new Connected model. Under Mr Biver, the Swiss watch house has made waves in the industry, breaking some of its traditional norms to reach the forefront of mechanics, technology and horological art; maintaining the brand’s deep savoir-faire heritage whilst being connected to eternity.

We, at Peter Jackson the Jeweller, are very proud to offer the TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 for sale on our website, with prices starting from £1450. Follow the link below to purchase yours today!

Why Do We Celebrate Valentines Day?

It’s February the 14th! The most romantic day of the year. Every February 14th, people across the world exchange chocolates, roses and meaningful gifts with their loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. It is considered to the best day to express your love and care for your special one or even express your feelings to the one you love. But do they really know the history behind this day? It is considered to the best day to express your love for your significant other – or to your family and friends! While many of us lap up Valentines Day, a number of us don’t actually know why…

We’ve trawled through the history books to try and discover the real reasons – and what we found casts a very different light on the holiday.

roses

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by the name ‘Valentine’, so the St Valentine that inspired the holiday may have been more than one man.

The saint officially recognised by the Roman Catholic Church was a real person who died around AD 270, but an account from 1400s describes Valentine as a priest who was beheaded by Emperor Claudius II for helping Christian couples wed. The emperor had banned marriage as he thought single men made better soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair so he celebrated marriages in secret. When the emperor found out he was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.

Valentine’s Day is an old tradition thought to have originated from a Roman Festival known as ‘Lupercalia’. It was held on February 15 as a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman God of agriculture. During the celebration boys would draw names of girls and the pair would be partners during the festival – a  match that often led to marriage.

The festival survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed at the end of the 5th century when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St Valentine’s Day.

But when did it become a tradition to celebrate love on this day? Well, St Valentine did help marry couples in secret, which is arguably very romantic and a celebration of love in itself. He is the patron saint of beekeepers and epilepsy among other things… like the plague, fainting and travelling (not so romantic). That doesn’t stop people calling on his help for those romantically involved. He’s now also the patron saint of engaged couples and happy marriages.

However,  it’s thought that Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales writer, may have actually been behind ‘creating’ the tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day. The medieval English poet apparently took quite a few liberties with history, dropping his poetic characters into real-life historical events leaving readers wondering if that’s what really happened.

There is no official actual record of Valentine’s Day before Chaucer’s poem in 1375 in which he linked the tradition of courtly love to the St Valentine’s feast day.  The poem refers to February 14 as the day of ‘birds coming together to find a mate’…

“For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate,” he wrote.

The tradition didn’t seem to exist until after his poem. So he may have actually “invented” Valentine’s Day as we now know it. Happy Valentines Day everyone!
