The Complete Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring: From the Experts at Peter Jackson the Jeweller

Buying an engagement ring is one of the most important and intimate decisions someone can make and it’s usually a once-in-a lifetime experience too.

Although you may feel a lot of pressure to get it right, choosing the right engagement ring doesn’t need to be a difficult process, especially if you do your research and speak to the experts.

At Peter Jackson the Jeweller, we’re committed to providing you with the very best in customer service, not just in store, but on our website too. That’s why we’ve produced this helpful online resource – ‘The Complete Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring’ – so you have all the information you need to make the right decision for you and your loved one.

Throughout this guide, we lean on the expertise from our very own Peter Jackson, who has decades of experience in choosing and sourcing quality diamonds and metals, ensuring you have the best possible choice of the most exquisite engagement rings.

Engagement ring frequently asked questions

We’ve outlined some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to buying an engagement ring. These should cover everything you need to know from how much to spend to how to find out your partner’s ring size.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

Before you can start choosing the perfect ring, you need to have a budget in mind. Although this may feel as if you’re taking away from the significance of the purchase, you should never feel pressured to spend more than you can afford – or feel tied down to traditions.

If you’re not sure what budget to allocate to an engagement ring, discuss what kind of styles and types of rings you like with an expert. This will give you an idea of how much you might need to buy your preferred ring.

With many jewellery companies, such as Peter Jackson the Jeweller, you can look into finance options for purchasing the engagement ring, allowing you to have more flexibility in your budget.

Where should I buy an engagement ring from?

You may have a specific jeweller in mind when it comes to buying an engagement ring – but remember to check their credentials, in regards to sourcing diamonds, before you make a purchase.

With Peter Jackson the Jeweller, Peter Jackson often travels to Antwerp, New York, and Yellowknife Canada to source the diamonds for our range of engagement rings, personally choosing each and every one. This ensures each diamond meets Peter’s strict criteria for clarity, colour, and cut.

Make sure you feel at ease with your jeweller and that you aren’t being rushed into a decision. Take note of their aftercare programme, including warranty and insurance, as well as any gift-wrapping services ,and perhaps have a look at their reviews on Google and Facebook

You might choose to buy your engagement ring online, which is becoming a more popular option. You should ensure you’re buying from a reputable company and that there’s a robust returns process in place and helpful customer service. At Peter Jackson the Jeweller, you may even find yourself speaking to Peter Jackson himself when using our online chat function!

How long should you take I decide on an engagement ring?

If you’re buying a bespoke engagement ring, you should bear in mind that this may take longer than a ready-made ring. However, that shouldn’t deter. This is a big decision and one which should last a lifetime.

Take your time when it comes to choosing the right engagement ring. Don’t feel rushed into a decision by sales people. You may have a select date in mind for when you’d like to propose – ensure you let the store know about this, so they can show you rings which will be available for that date and advise you accordingly.

And if you do find a ring that you could potentially buy on the spot, it’s a good idea to mull it over by visiting other stores nearby or even going for a coffee. Take this time to really envisage presenting the ring to your partner and what their reaction might be. Think about whether they’ll love the ring just as much in ten, twenty, or even fifty years’ time – and if it’s robust enough to last until then.

Do I have to stick with traditions when it comes to buying an engagement ring?

Absolutely not. If traditions are your thing and you’d feel more comfortable following them, then don’t be afraid to do so. But if your partner isn’t a diamond person, or maybe a simple band would do the trick, don’t feel you need to buy a ‘traditional’ engagement ring simply because that’s what tradition determines.

Some people even decide to forgo a ring altogether and propose with a watch or earrings or necklace. You know your partner the best, so make a decision that you know will make them happy, not what society states.

If you and your partner have made the mutual decision to get married, you may decide to choose their (and your) engagement ring together. This can be a truly wonderful experience – and means you both get exactly what you want!

How do I find out my partner’s ring size without them knowing?

If you do decide to propose with a ring, you may be wondering how to find out your partner’s ring size – especially if it’s not something you’ve needed to know before.

One thing to remember is that you don’t actually need to know their exact size when purchasing. If they wear rings on a daily basis, you can use one of these as a rough guide. If they don’t wear rings, you could take an educated guess and hope for the best.

Remember, high quality rings can be adjusted and resized, so even if you get it wrong, your partner will still be able to enjoy their ring in its box and wear it once it’s been resized.

Choosing your engagement ring style

How to choose the perfect diamond

For many people, choosing an engagement ring will be the first time they’ve ever had to consider diamonds. Here’s a quick run-down of the top features you should consider.

  • Colour

Diamonds should be colourless – and the closer to colourless they are, the rarer they will be. This is a good indication that they’re more valuable, making your choice of engagement ring an investment for the future.

Selecting diamonds for jewellery is an extremely specialist process, which takes years to perfect – luckily, our diamonds are personally selected by Peter Jackson, with over 30 years of experience of providing beautiful collections for our four north west stores.

  • Cut

When it comes to getting the cut of the diamond, quality is key. Peter Jackson reviews each and every diamond individually – and actually rejects up to 80% of the diamonds we receive because the cut simply isn’t up to his standards. The cut of a diamond is important as this is how well your diamond will catch the light and sparkle. Symmetry and precise proportions are key!

  • Clarity

Of course, as with anything in nature, nothing is perfect – and this is the same for diamonds. However, Peter ensures that each and every diamond he chooses meets his required criteria for dealing with ‘Mother Nature’s Fingerprint’ . This means selecting diamonds that have fewer inclusions that they don’t interfere with the brilliance of the diamond.

  • Carat Weight

You may have heard about carats when looking at diamond products previously – but you might not actually know what it means. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond; one carat is 0.2 grams. The heavier a diamond is the rarer and more valuable it will be. This also means that the heavier a diamond is, the more expensive it is too (dependent on the colour, clarity and cut). An interesting fact to note is that only one diamond in a million weighs a carat or more.

  • Shape

Diamonds aren’t naturally mined in different shapes. They need to be cut (see above) in order to reach the desired effect. We’ll go through the shapes of the diamonds you can choose in more detail below, but some of the more popular shapes include: princess, oval, pear, and round brilliant.

How to choose the right diamond cut (shape)

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to diamond cuts (shapes). Some are more unusual than others, but it all comes down to the style of your partner and their personal taste.

  • Round brilliant
  • Pear
  • Baguette
  • Oval
  • Marquise
  • Cushion
  • Emerald cut
  • Square
  • Heart

Alternative engagement ring gemstones

If you don’t think diamonds will be the perfect choice for your partner, or you’re after something a little different, why not consider an alternative gemstone engagement ring? Certain gemstones, or even birthstones, might have significant meaning to your partner and can be a special memento for them. You can also set diamonds with coloured gemstones to create a truly breath-taking ring.

Remember, one of the world’s more famous engagement rings was the stunning blue sapphire and diamond ring of Princess Diana that is today worn by Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge.

Gemstones can often be more affordable than diamonds, if that’s something you’re thinking about. Take a look at just some of the options you might consider:

  • Amethyst
  • Aquamarine
  • Blue Zircon
  • Citrine
  • Emerald
  • Garnet
  • Morganite
  • Opal
  • Peridot
  • Ruby
  • Sapphire
  • Topaz

What metal should I choose for an engagement ring?

Look for durability and style when choosing the metal for your engagement ring. An engagement ring should last a lifetime, with regular maintenance and looking after. However, certain metals can affect the price of your piece, so do bear that in mind.

With gold, you can usually choose between 9ct or 18ct – but what’s the difference? We’ll go through some of your options below.

  • Yellow gold

If you’re after something more traditional, this would certainly be a popular choice, as it can look extremely luxurious next to a quality diamond. It’s also what you associate with the natural hue of gold, with warm tones along and rich lustre – the perfect choice for a classic, traditional look.

  • White gold

Adding white metals, such as silver and zinc, turns the gold a silver-grey colour. Plating the finished article with rhodium gives the jewellery the bright sparkling effect that we know as white gold. This perfectly complements the brilliant diamonds.

  • Rose gold

Rose gold is fast becoming a popular choice when it comes to engagement rings. The rose colour is achieved by adding copper to the alloy. If you like the warmth and richness of this hue, rose gold could be the one for you.

  • Platinum

Platinum is rarer and harder than gold. Typically, only 5% of alloy is added. Although platinum is a much harder metal to work with (which adds to the cost), the end result is a very durable but beautiful. A platinum ring doesn’t need rhodium plating and won’t tarnish over time, requiring little maintenance and security for the gemstone.

  • 9ct or 18ct gold

Carat refers to how pure the gold within the ring is. The higher the carat, the higher the proportion of gold within the ring. 9 carat is the minimum standard recognised in the UK and therefore the most popular. 18 carat gold is far purer and has a richer, warmer colour.

So, 9 carat or 18 carat? Yellow, white or rose gold? The choice is yours. Let our experts guide you and explain the differences.

How to choose the right style

So you have an idea now of what your engagement ring might look like. But there’s another element to think about – the setting. This refers to how the diamonds or gemstones might sit in the ring, and how many diamonds or gemstones are required to fill the setting. Let’s go through these below.

  • Solitaire

If your partner’s style is simple and chic, then a solitaire setting may be the right choice. This simply means that you have one diamond or gemstone, which is held in place by usually 4 – 6 claws. These allow the diamond to shine and showcase itself as much as possible. Although simple, this certainly doesn’t take away from the elegance of the design.

  • Cluster

Fancy something a little more intricate? A cluster setting could be the solution. Usually, a cluster ring contains a slightly bigger stone within the middle, and then smaller stones around the outside of this. The larger diamond or gemstone is showcased superbly and set off by the smaller stones, creating an eye-catching piece.

  • Three stone

If you’re after something more traditional, then the three stone setting might work for you and your partner. The three stones are said to indicate your past, present, and future with your loved one. Even without this extremely romantic backstory, the three stone setting is perfect if you’re looking for something simple and understated, but still fabulously elegant.

  • Halo

Similar to a cluster setting, the halo does exactly what it implies – surrounds the focus diamond or gemstone with multiple smaller stones. The difference to a cluster setting is that the smaller stones are set tightly around the edge of the larger stone, creating an illusion of there being a much bigger diamond or gemstone in the middle.

Book an appointment in store

Choosing an engagement ring, whether alone or together, is an intimate and personal experience. At Peter Jackson the Jeweller, we know how special this purchase is, which is why we recommend booking an appointment in store, with one of our experts – or try our virtual service too and chat with one of our team via Zoom, or simply call in whenever is convenient for you.

Discuss warranty and insurance

An engagement ring is an expensive and important purchase – regardless of the financial implications, the sentimental value alone makes it worth insuring. Make sure you discuss warranties and insurance with whoever you’re buying from, as these are important issues to consider when making an engagement ring purchase.

Our collections

We have a number of beautiful engagement ring collections at Peter Jackson the Jeweller. Take a look below at some of our gorgeous collections – and don’t forget, if you can’t see something that’s just right, contact us directly and we’ll be more than happy to talk through exactly what you’re after.

  • Peter Jackson Collection

The Peter Jackson Collection is a beautiful range of engagement rings, handpicked by Peter Jackson himself. This range showcases Peter’s precise eye for diamonds, providing you with the cut and clarity that will make their heart dazzle.

  • Canadian Arctic Diamonds

Deep under the ice and snow of the Canadian Arctic, diamonds have been discovered close to the remote and beautiful town of Yellowknife.

A select proportion of these diamonds are retained to be cut and polished in modern state-of-the-art factories in Canada, where the standards demanded from the diamond cutters are the highest we have experienced anywhere in the world. The result is a finished gem of exquisite brilliance and beauty.

Peter Jackson the Jeweller is proud to be the only jeweller in the country permitted to offer you these Canadian Arctic Diamonds.

  • Perfection Collection

Graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), our Perfection Collection is simply that: perfection presented in platinum. If you’re after flawless and completely colourless diamonds, then choosing an engagement ring from this collection is the right option for you. You and your partner are perfect for each other; why not choose a ring to match?

Our gift buying guide from our favourite brands,
Of watches and jewellery high in demand.

At Peter Jackson the Jeweller, we appreciate it is sometimes hard to focus with so much to choose from and finding the ideal gift for a loved one can be overwhelming. Here we are proud to present five of our brands that provide fabulous options both online and in our five beautiful North-West stores.

Our collections are vast, but here are just a few of our favourite picks to ensure the most special Christmas morning this 2020.

Gucci

The Italian luxury fashion house continues to be one of the most desired brands in the world and cares passionately for their watch and jewellery sector. The same love and quality is seen in their watches and jewellery as you would expect in any of their products; an attitude not seen in many of the fashion ‘big boys’. For 2020 Gucci have gone almost retro with some of their designs, homing in on a 70’s to 80’s look that has worked so well for them.

For their jewellery we still cannot look past the ‘Interlocking G’ Stud Earrings as the ultimate accessory, so versatile are these ‘GG’ logo studs they will look great with any outfit in any season and are our go-to recommendation for the fashionista this Christmas. But if you are looking for something with a little more flair, this ‘Marmont’ Key Necklace may unlock the prize to the greatest jewellery gift this year.

Classic Gucci Style

We could not talk about Gucci without mentioning arguably our favourite ladies watch to be released this Autumn / Winter. The Slim Bee line has been added to the classical Timeless collection and features the cutest second hand ever seen on a watch. Rather than a third traditional second hand that ticks around the dial, Gucci have opted for a Bee that sits on top of the minute and hours hands and rotates with each tick. Available in two sizes in both gold and silver coloured options there is a watch to match everyone’s taste.

Slim Bee Timeless

Hugo Boss – BOSS Watches and Jewellery

BOSS started 2020 with a bang, launching their first full collection of men’s and women’s jewellery to sit alongside their ever-popular watches. The modern contemporary stylings that you see in the men’s and women’s textile fashion fall perfectly in line with their watch and jewellery range, allowing you to accessorise your look in a sophisticated manner. We have been particularly impressed by just how well the men’s jewellery has been received with certain pieces selling out multiple times.

Demand for men’s fashion jewellery is on the rise and we love a watch and bracelet pairing. You can either wear the bracelet and watch on different wrists or wear next them to each other. A great pairing for us is the new ‘Circuit’ watch with a brown strap and a matching ‘Essential’ brown leather and steel bracelet; a combo that can be worn well with a BOSS suit or more casual with a BOSS polo.

BOSS, GQ Men of the Year

Women’s and Men’s pieces from BOSS are distinctively feminine or masculine playing to each audience impeccably. Our Women’s top Christmas buy is a pretty rose gold affair with the glitz and glam of the winter season, another watch and bracelet pairing with subtle nods to each other’s designs ensure the ‘Signature’ Watch and ‘Ophelia’ Circle Bracelet work beautifully with other and are a real ‘WOW’ factor of a gift.

BOSS Ladies Collection

This winter, Thomas Sabo have revamped the collection now known as ‘Charming’.

Rita Ora has been the ambassador for Thomas Sabo for a couple years now, and this Christmas you will see her featured on their main advertisement imagery with the new Gold Moon and Star Silver Necklace. We love this continuation of the ‘Kingdom of Dreams’ collection that screams wintery designs with their cosmic-inspired motifs.

Bremont ALT1-C Griffon Watch

Arguably the most iconic aircraft to have been produced on British soil, is the Supermarine Spitfire. The spitfire is near and dear to the hearts of the co-founder of Bremont, Nick and Giles English as late father Euan proudly operated this famous single-seat fighter that was used by the Royal Air Force. A true testament to the beautiful story of Bremont the ‘ALT1-C GRIFFON’ is fantastic tribute.

The name Griffon comes from arguably the finest engine fitted to a spitfire with this being the configuration that was once owned by the English family. The Griffon was a concept that from the start had to produced in the ALT1-C, as this was the first watch designed by the English brothers.

Whilst the Griffon retains the core DNA from the original ALT1-C Cream, it has an updated darker dial and hands and the detail on this new model harks back to some early chronometer designs with more of a ‘military instrument’ feel to it. The cream lume certainly adds to this effect of vintage military style.

The stories for me are the reason I love selling Bremont watches and there are so many stories to tell. The ALT1-C GRIFFON is the embodiment of the Spitfire – technical innovation, precision and durability and has an amazing story.Gemma Smith PJ Dip – Blackburn Assistant Manager

The Oris Carysfort Reef Limited Edition

This magnificent timepiece is the first of its kind in the Oris diving watch history to be made from solid 18 carat yellow gold. Not only that, it is limited to an exclusive 50 pieces worldwide. To top it off, by investing in one of these unique pieces you will also be supporting the “Coral Restoration Foundation”; a percentage of the sales from these watches are raising money to help the charity to continue with their hard efforts of improving the coral reefs back to their former natural beauty. This is part of Oris’s ‘change for the better’ mission to help the planet.

What are the features of this timepiece?

The Carysfort Reef watch has the traditional automatic movement, Oris 798, with a 42 hour power reserve.  The case, bezel and crown are all crafted in solid 18 carat gold while the bezel is featuring a scratch and fade resistant blue and black ceramic inlay which represents night and day for the second time zone feature. Protecting the deep blue dial with gold plated hands is a scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating to allow better visibility both in and out of the water.

Turning the watch over you will see the delicate coral image that celebrates 30,000 corals having been planted along with the individual limited-edition number that is engraved into a sapphire crystal inlay set into the gold case back. Fitted to the case, the strap is a deep-sea blue leather coated with rubber for added protection against water and fastened with an 18 carat gold buckle.

The Oris Carysfort Reef is presented in a spectacular wooden presentation box and comes with a three-year international warranty.

Who is The Coral Restoration Foundation?

They are the leading non-profit coral restoration organisation group which are working endlessly to reintroduce coral to damaged reefs in the Great Barrier Reefs. Coral has disappeared by 98 percent since the 1950’s and 60’s when the reefs were at their height of recreational diving.

This Oris timepiece is supporting their on going work in Carysfort in Key Largo, Florida. It is the only barrier reef in the USA and the 3rd largest in the world. By the end of this year the foundation will have planted over 30,000 corals on the Florida Reef and this has been achievable because of the partnership with Oris. They hope to restore the reef to its original historical levels and then it can begin its natural recovery process.

Restoring the coral is done by using cuttings from the existing living corals in the reefs as they have survived the harsh conditions so they will have more of a chance of growing and continuing to survive the effects of climate change. The cuttings are left to grow in a protected ocean nursery and checked every seven days. One cutting can produce thousands of new hardier corals. Cuttings are eventually taken from these growing trees and placed into the coral reefs to start the restoration process.

Why is Coral restoration important?

Coral is an essential ecosystem to the planet as it provides 70 percent of the worlds oxygen although it only covers 1 percent of the earths surface, which is pretty incredible right? It also protects the shorelines and supports fisheries as 25 percent of the marine species call it home.

Sadly without any action in the next 80 years coral reefs could disappear and become extinct. This is due to climate change causing the sea temperature to rise. Making it one of the most endangered ecosystems on planet earth.

So with the purchase of this watch you are not only buying a unique, sought after piece to adorn your wrist, you are also helping towards saving the planet. Our company is incredibly lucky to have secured one of these watches. If you would like further information or to pre-order this watch follow this link to our website or contact your nearest branch.

Clogau

Nothing screams British in the jewellery industry like Clogau. The Welsh, second generation, family run company is inspired by the rolling hills of North Wales and the heritage of the British Isles. Famed for their use of rare Welsh gold, every piece of jewellery that Clogau contains a trace of Welsh gold.

This Valentine’s, Clogau has an exciting offer where every Clogau purchase made over £99 will receive a free bracelet worth £119! This offer will not stick around for long as it is only available while stocks last, but you could treat a loved one to this pretty Tree of Life® Heart Pendant for just £119 and receive the matching free bracelet with complete matching set worth £238.

A limited-edition product already has a different factor, it’s a great feeling to know that the item you own is just one of a few. Through our close relationship with Clogau, we have produced two stunning limited-edition pendants that are exclusive to us in very small quantities. The silver Tree of Life® Origin Amethyst Limited-Edition Pendant is limited to just 40 pieces or if you want to splash out more on the moment, then how about the luxurious 9ct gold version that is just 1 of 10.

Emporio Armani

From one of the leading fashion houses in the world, Emporio Armani create modern contemporary watches for both Men and Women that would easily fit in the catwalks of Italy. The famous eagle logo sits proudly on the dial of each watch and could be the best wristwear to treat someone to this Valentine’s.

The Renato Gents Blue Leather Strap Watch oozes Italian sophistication with its soft leather, a handsome blue dial and a pop of rose gold on the bezel to contrast the steel case; a watch for both formal and casual occasions.

A ladies’ watch with a difference, The Aurora Floral Rose Gold Watch has a luxury feel defined by the floral dial playing with tones of soft silver and grey; a brilliant backdrop to the key features produced in rose gold plating.

Tissot

Swiss made is the biggest stamp of approval a watch brand can receive, but a watch brand with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, swiss movement, 2-year international warranty and heritage dating back to the 1800’s for less than £500 is outstanding. In fact, Tissot watches start from just £180! For Valentine’s day if you are looking for the best quality for your money in a watch, then look no further.

We love the simplicity of our first piece. The T-Lady Blue Square Dial Lovely Bracelet Watch has understated class defined by a vintage feel, in its case shape and mesh worked bracelet. Each Tissot watch is presented in beautiful presentation box to add to the wow factor you are looking for.

Our next pick has become a bit of a standard bearer for Swiss Chronograph watches. The amount of watch you get for your money is so good that this design from Tissot has almost become a classic. For a gents Tissot to give to someone, we could not recommend the PRC200 Quartz Chronograph Watch more.

Thomas Sabo

What would Valentine’s Day be without love hearts? The official symbol of love is a simple but treasured one. The moment someone unwraps a beautiful piece of jewellery designed as a love heart, no words need to be spoken, the symbol says exactly what you want it to say, and the receiver can take your love with them wherever they go.

Anklets have seen a rise in popularity and finding something for your partner that is unique is sometimes difficult. A quality sterling silver anklet could be a great alternative. The fashionable Thomas Sabo Pave Heart Anklet features a cubic zirconia heart that will look fabulous shown off in the spring and summer seasons.

Staying simple is never a bad option, a piece of jewellery you could wear everyday maximises the usage of the gift and we think these earrings are great design. The Thomas Sabo Open Heart Earrings are a tasteful usage of the love heart to wear day in day out.

The new collection, is in partnership with the stylish UK singer-songwriter, Rita Ora, includes a wide range of stunning necklaces, charms, and bracelets, as well as earrings, rings and watches at both ends of the pay bracket.

One purchase that would make a really special gift is the brand’s stunning vintage-inspired Stone Set Baguette Centre Ring. This silver ring, with white zirconia and sparkling stones, has a baguette cut stone, which makes it stackable but also a highlight when worn individually.

Hugo Boss  – BOSS Watches

Founded in 1923, Hugo Boss has a reputation for its cutting-edge style, contemporary and trend-setting design and masculine overtones. Its impressive collection of watches, which sits in the middle of the price bracket, embodies classic features and is built with the brand’s signature style.

One highlight for men is the Master Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch. This stunning watch, emphasises a classic look, displaying a mixture of polished and satin stainless steel with an all-white textured face. The timepiece is water resistant, has a simple quartz movement and requires minimal upkeep.

Or if you want to go all out for the woman in your life, choose the spectacular 36mm Diamonds For Her Mother Of Pearl Bracelet Watch. From the brand’s “Diamonds For Her”collection, this spectacular stainless steel watch, with silver hands and batons, is enhanced by eight glistening diamonds around the dial.

Olivia Burton

Founded by best friends Jemma and Lesa, who met on their first day at the London College of Fashion, this a British accessories brand that combines influences from vintage, fashion and nature, while pushing the boundaries to create unique and striking styles. The collection of jewellery and watches boasts stunning floral patterns alongside vintage style to make truly special and affordable pieces.

One highlight from the range is the Marble Floral Lilac & Rose Gold Watch. This stunning timepiece, which is powered by a three-hand quartz movement, features blossoming floral motifs across a white marble effect dial, enhanced with the contrast of a soft and smooth leather strap.

Also from the collection this Christmas is the 3D Bee Open Rose Gold Bangle, a delicate piece made with an 18k rose gold-plated finish. This unique bangle showcases the company’s signature bee motif at each end, with an open-ended design that can be pressed or expanded to fit the wrist.

Gucci

One of the world’s most famous and prestigious luxury fashion houses, the Italian designer creates stunning statement designer jewellery and, back in 1972, became one of the first brands to move into timepieces. Made in Switzerland, it is the marriage of Swiss manufacturing and Italian flair that makes Gucci’s watches stand out, combining tradition with innovation and craftsmanship.

One of the newer pieces of the Gucci’s jewellery collection are the popular Gucci Trademark Stud Earrings. The lady in your life will feel like she’s straight off the catwalk with these simple and slick, yet fabulously effective, stud earrings, which are all about showing off that iconic Gucci logo.

If you really want to go all out to impress that special person in your life this Christmas, the stunning stainless steel G-Timeless Automatic Onyx Dial Bracelet Watch, aimed at both men and women, could be the answer. This impressive high-end unisex timepiece, with Swizz-made automatic movement, takes inspiration from the famous Gucci bee motif, which is emblazoned beautifully across its black onyx dial.

Clogau

This iconic British brand, which has been creating jewellery for over 30 years using rare Welsh gold, has made pieces that even featured in a number of royal weddings. The stunning collection is a celebration of Welsh landscapes and heritage, beautifully crafted, yet affordable, with pieces offered in gold, rose gold and silver.

Our favourite affordable choice from the range is the beautiful Butterfly Affinity Beaded Bracelet. Part of Clogau’s Affinity collection, this elegant bracelet is crafted from sterling silver and rose gold, set off by a beautiful butterfly and amethyst.

A little more extravagant is the Tree of Life Cross Pendant. From Clogau’s Tree of Life collection, which acts as a metaphor to describe the relationship of all life on Earth, the beautifully intricate pendant is crafted in sterling silver and rose gold and includes designs of berries, leaves and vines.

These are just a handful of the fabulous brands we’re offering at Peter Jackson the Jeweller this Christmas. To see more and to get some gift inspiration for the men and women in your life, please visit our Gifts for Him and Gifts for Her pages.

Gucci GRIP

The fashion industry seems to have gone Gucci mad over the last four years. Alessandro Michele’s appointment as Gucci’s creative director, has driven the brand in a direction that many would not have expected, especially those who were more accustomed to the brand famous for ‘boutique brown’ and gold with dashes of the Italian flag. Despite anyone’s opinion Gucci have without doubt become an even bigger powerhouse in the fashion world.

Alessandro’s vision is certainly not conservative with his designs, a 70’s-esque feel with wild colours and patterns has grown this megabrand. Gucci is no longer just a fashion brand, it’s a symbol, a statement, it’s an adjective word! The latest design straight from the 70’s that is sure to be the hottest fashion led watch for Christmas is the ‘Gucci Grip’

The Skateboard Design.

Two Gucci Grip Styles to Show Diversity

The name explains a lot, the Grip is meant to replicate the grip on the top of a skateboard. The lined pattern featuring the ‘GG’ logo is a representation of the grip, though not all models feature this pattern some are more understated in design.

One thing that is used throughout is the distinctive case that is not quite squared and not quite round, but certainly has a recognisable look, again, another subtle nod to a skateboards design. Alessandro has been pushing for more gender fluid designs and this watch will be the first truly gender-neutral watch to come from the brand.

A New Way to View the Time.

Without question, one element that has people talking is the three-window element to the case. Rather than an encompassing glass, it’s hard to argue if the watch even has a dial at all. But what it does have is three windows, to represent what you actually use a watch for, to tell the time and date. The top window is minutes, middle is hours and a lower window for the date.

Even the font on the numerals has a retro feel to it – almost digital like, but this watch is certainly not a Japanese digital movement; the same movement that took over the watch world in the 70’s and 80’s. True to Gucci’s luxury form, this watch houses a Swiss made quartz movement. All of Gucci’s watches are made in Switzerland; the home of luxury watches and movements.

Match Your Vibe

Are you a strap or a bracelet wearer? Well the great news is the ‘GRIP’ comes in many styles with both hand-stitched leather straps and adjustable bracelets. The first line of watches is expected to be the first of many, as Gucci will surely develop the Grip further.

Currently you can choose your combination of patterned or plain cases in both 316L surgical grade steel in its natural silver colour or a gold pvd finish. Then you can combine with your choice of matching bracelet or an alligator leather strap in green or bordeaux burgundy.

An Original Iconic Piece.

One question we are asking ourselves is, do we have a truly iconic watch in our midst? As Gucci continues to break the rules of fashion and grow, no one can argue at this moment in time, that Gucci are the number one trend setters in the world. So, with this first batch of Gucci Grips, could you be buying into a revered iconic watch, that will be more sought after from Gucci aficionados in the future?

Very few watches make us think this way, but because the Grip is so distinctive and no other luxury brand is producing anything like this, it’s certainly is worth the question.

Introducing The Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115

Since Baselword 2019, we along with many Oris stockists have been tight lipped about the arrival of the latest and greatest in-house movement watch to be introduced by Oris. As per usual, a standard meeting on Oris’s impressive stand in the Basel convention hall of Messe Basel was set up with the Swiss watchmakers founded in 1904. Unusually this year we were whisked away into a dark room void of light, with our laptops and mobiles confiscated. After a short introduction, a VR headset was affixed to our heads and a full 360-degree immersive video was played to us as we wandered around the inside of the latest movement from Oris. Now this may sound strange and it was, but the combination of this awe-inspiring cinemaphotography along with the dramatic music was captivating.

It has now been six months since we were first introduced to this watch, with an embargo finally being lifted we, along with the rest of the watch community can talk about possibly the most interesting watch to be released in 2019.

The Concept

In total, around two years Oris have been developing the ‘ProPilot X Calibre 115’, a watch Oris are so excited about they have gone as far as to declare this watch as “the most Oris watch we’ve ever made – every watch that went before it has led us to this point.” So, what is so unique about this timepiece?

This watch has taken Oris’s current in-house movement concept of a patented 10-day power-reserve and skeletonised it down to a form where everything is laid bare for all to see. A skeleton watch is not unusual but the way Oris have produced this concept with their calibre 115 certainly is.

The Calibre 115 Movement

A hand-wound movement with a 10-day power reserve operated through the single crown of the watch is the technology Oris created to celebrate their 110th anniversary. Since then extra complications have been added to this now base movement of the ‘calibre 110’ to evolve the collection at a greater rate, with this year being the linear introduction of the calibre 115. To strip back a full movement to a skeletonised version is no mean feat, let alone to the degree in what Oris have accomplished.

The main issue with carving away at the full movement to make every element as visible as possible, is that you may take the risk of compromising the structural integrity of the movement. With this being said, Oris have done an amazing job of opening up this movement to the degree they have. My main visual delight that I take away is that of the barrell at 12 o’clock position is skeletonised so you can see the extended mainspring that is normally completely encased.

Winding the crown, now you watch on as the mainspring coils tighter… and tighter… until its fully wound. Normally a mainspring in a watch is small as you would imagine, with any mechanical watch movement, but the mainspring used to effectively be the 10-day power reserve in this movement is nearly gargantuan and now you can see the coil and appreciate the greatness of this patented technology as it ever so slowly unwinds, looking different at each glance.

The look Of The ProPilot X

The first pilots watch with Oris’s famous ‘big crown’ was introduced in 1917, since then the big crown has lent itself to Oris’s history in many forms. Ease of use and readability is vital to a pilot’s watch, certainly in the days of turboprop planes, before technology passed from being a distraction to a must have, hence the big crown, but the evolution of this line of watch has come to the first Oris Big Crown watch to feature no numerals, to greatly enhance the hollowed out movement.

A multipiece 44mm titanium case looks and feels raw as each part is not polished or faceted or as Oris put it “No flashy colour palette. No pointless complications. It’s essential, It’s crafted, It’s alive.” I love this concept because if you want to produce an outstanding movement at a great price point for haute horology enthusiasts, then let the movement be the focal point, allow the wearer to appreciate the craftsmanship, luxury doesn’t have to be ostentatious.

If you prefer understated and workmanship or are big believers in Oris’s moto of ‘Go Your Own Way’ then this watch may be the luxury collectors watch, you have been looking for. Limited deliveries of this special timepiece are expected for 2019 with only around 40 arriving in the UK, to which we have secured two. For all enquires please contact us for more information or book an in-store appointment for a private viewing of the ProPilot X 115 via this link.
