As well as providing a click and collect service from all of our stores, we can also deliver your gifts directly to your door. The fashion industry seems to have gone Gucci mad over the last four years. Alessandro Michele’s appointment as Gucci’s creative director, has driven the brand in a direction that many would not have expected, especially those who were more accustomed to the brand famous for ‘boutique brown’ and gold with dashes of the Italian flag. Despite anyone’s opinion Gucci have without doubt become an even bigger powerhouse in the fashion world.

Alessandro’s vision is certainly not conservative with his designs, a 70’s-esque feel with wild colours and patterns has grown this megabrand. Gucci is no longer just a fashion brand, it’s a symbol, a statement, it’s an adjective word! The latest design straight from the 70’s that is sure to be the hottest fashion led watch for Christmas is the ‘Gucci Grip’

The Skateboard Design.

The name explains a lot, the Grip is meant to replicate the grip on the top of a skateboard. The lined pattern featuring the ‘GG’ logo is a representation of the grip, though not all models feature this pattern some are more understated in design.

One thing that is used throughout is the distinctive case that is not quite squared and not quite round, but certainly has a recognisable look, again, another subtle nod to a skateboards design. Alessandro has been pushing for more gender fluid designs and this watch will be the first truly gender-neutral watch to come from the brand. 

A New Way to View the Time.

Without question, one element that has people talking is the three-window element to the case. Rather than an encompassing glass, it’s hard to argue if the watch even has a dial at all. But what it does have is three windows, to represent what you actually use a watch for, to tell the time and date. The top window is minutes, middle is hours and a lower window for the date.

Even the font on the numerals has a retro feel to it – almost digital like, but this watch is certainly not a Japanese digital movement; the same movement that took over the watch world in the 70’s and 80’s. True to Gucci’s luxury form, this watch houses a Swiss made quartz movement. All of Gucci’s watches are made in Switzerland; the home of luxury watches and movements.

Match Your Vibe

Are you a strap or a bracelet wearer? Well the great news is the ‘GRIP’ comes in many styles with both hand-stitched leather straps and adjustable bracelets. The first line of watches is expected to be the first of many, as Gucci will surely develop the Grip further.

Currently you can choose your combination of patterned or plain cases in both 316L surgical grade steel in its natural silver colour or a gold pvd finish. Then you can combine with your choice of matching bracelet or an alligator leather strap in green or bordeaux burgundy.

An Original Iconic Piece.

One question we are asking ourselves is, do we have a truly iconic watch in our midst? As Gucci continues to break the rules of fashion and grow, no one can argue at this moment in time, that Gucci are the number one trend setters in the world. So, with this first batch of Gucci Grips, could you be buying into a revered iconic watch, that will be more sought after from Gucci aficionados in the future?

Very few watches make us think this way, but because the Grip is so distinctive and no other luxury brand is producing anything like this, it’s certainly is worth the question.

Since Baselword 2019, we along with many Oris stockists have been tight lipped about the arrival of the latest and greatest in-house movement watch to be introduced by Oris. As per usual, a standard meeting on Oris’s impressive stand in the Basel convention hall of Messe Basel was set up with the Swiss watchmakers founded in 1904. Unusually this year we were whisked away into a dark room void of light, with our laptops and mobiles confiscated. After a short introduction, a VR headset was affixed to our heads and a full 360-degree immersive video was played to us as we wandered around the inside of the latest movement from Oris. Now this may sound strange and it was, but the combination of this awe-inspiring cinemaphotography along with the dramatic music was captivating.

It has now been six months since we were first introduced to this watch, with an embargo finally being lifted we, along with the rest of the watch community can talk about possibly the most interesting watch to be released in 2019.

The Concept

In total, around two years Oris have been developing the ‘ProPilot X Calibre 115’, a watch Oris are so excited about they have gone as far as to declare this watch as “the most Oris watch we’ve ever made – every watch that went before it has led us to this point.” So, what is so unique about this timepiece?

This watch has taken Oris’s current in-house movement concept of a patented 10-day power-reserve and skeletonised it down to a form where everything is laid bare for all to see. A skeleton watch is not unusual but the way Oris have produced this concept with their calibre 115 certainly is.

The Calibre 115 Movement

A hand-wound movement with a 10-day power reserve operated through the single crown of the watch is the technology Oris created to celebrate their 110^th anniversary. Since then extra complications have been added to this now base movement of the ‘calibre 110’ to evolve the collection at a greater rate, with this year being the linear introduction of the calibre 115. To strip back a full movement to a skeletonised version is no mean feat, let alone to the degree in what Oris have accomplished.

The main issue with carving away at the full movement to make every element as visible as possible, is that you may take the risk of compromising the structural integrity of the movement. With this being said, Oris have done an amazing job of opening up this movement to the degree they have. My main visual delight that I take away is that of the barrell at 12 o’clock position is skeletonised so you can see the extended mainspring that is normally completely encased.

Winding the crown, now you watch on as the mainspring coils tighter… and tighter… until its fully wound. Normally a mainspring in a watch is small as you would imagine, with any mechanical watch movement, but the mainspring used to effectively be the 10-day power reserve in this movement is nearly gargantuan and now you can see the coil and appreciate the greatness of this patented technology as it ever so slowly unwinds, looking different at each glance.

The look Of The ProPilot X

The first pilots watch with Oris’s famous ‘big crown’ was introduced in 1917, since then the big crown has lent itself to Oris’s history in many forms. Ease of use and readability is vital to a pilot’s watch, certainly in the days of turboprop planes, before technology passed from being a distraction to a must have, hence the big crown, but the evolution of this line of watch has come to the first Oris Big Crown watch to feature no numerals, to greatly enhance the hollowed out movement.

A multipiece 44mm titanium case looks and feels raw as each part is not polished or faceted or as Oris put it “No flashy colour palette. No pointless complications. It’s essential, It’s crafted, It’s alive.” I love this concept because if you want to produce an outstanding movement at a great price point for haute horology enthusiasts, then let the movement be the focal point, allow the wearer to appreciate the craftsmanship, luxury doesn’t have to be ostentatious.

The annual event invites luxury watch brands such as TAG Heuer, Rolex, Gucci, Oris, Tudor, Citizen and many more to promote their latest innovation over the course of a week. Baselworld 2019 saw TAG Heuer unveil many new timepieces to their every growing portfolio; including the reinvention of the Autavia and the introduction of a 36mm ladies’ Carrera’s. Another watch reinvented and hitting our stores today in preparation for the 103^rd motor-race is the Special Edition Indy 500.

Created with motor sport in mind; I anticipate that racing enthusiasts all over the world will be dying to get their hands on this special edition timepiece, whether as a memento of the Indy 500 event or just as an everyday watch. What is the Indy 500?

 

 

Indy 500 is the nickname given to the world-famous motor-race the ‘Indianapolis 500’; which occurs on Memorial Day Bank Holiday weekend in America. The weekend is arguably the most paramount in motor-racing due to the Monaco grand prix and the Coca Cola 600 also occurring on the same day. Including 33 drivers and 500 miles, the race is part of the Indy car series for which TAG Heuer are the official timekeepers, the objective is to record the fastest lap.

 

Why are TAG Heuer so synonymously connected to motor racing?

 

 

TAG Heuer, previously ‘Heuer’ have since the early 1900’s been somewhat involved in the world of racing. One of their most decisive moments in history was 1950; when Heuer produced the worlds first miniature electronic timekeeping device – accurate to within 1 / 1000^th of a second and used by many racing professionals of the time.

A famed history with motor-racing has earned TAG Heuer a great amount of respect from many recognisable racing heroes including Ayrton Senna and Clay Regazzoni and is why today, TAG Heuer is seen branded throughout many motor races across the world; including the Indy 500.

To help you get to know us better we’re putting the spotlight onto some of our Peter Jackson Family.

Who they are

 

Our first team member is Jaime from our Carlisle branch. Jaime may be a very familiar face to many of you as she started working for the company when the store opened in November 2002.

Over the last 16 years she has grown from sales advisor to supervisor, then into her current role of assistant manager.

Her hard work and dedication for this company doesn’t stop there. In 2005 she achieved her Professional Jewellers Diploma collecting her graduation certificate in The Goldsmiths Hall in London. This qualification furthered her knowledge in all aspects of the jewellery industry to help advise customers and to challenge herself. Jaime also passed her Professional Jewellers Management Diploma in 2011. This covers all areas of management, from running a shop, to staff members, admin and our main priority, the customer.

 

What does she enjoy about her job?

Jaime enjoys problem solving, or as we call it at Carlisle ‘detective work’. Whether this is a problem a customer is having, or something is wrong at stock take Jaime will always take it on and find the solution.

From her problem solving and many qualifications, Jaime has gained a lot of knowledge and this has resulted in being given the nickname ‘Ceefax’ from her colleagues (some of the younger readers may need to Google that) because 9 out of 10 times she will know the answer to a question.

Her other passion at work is meeting new people. This has led to Jaime being the Peter Jackson the Jeweller representative at wedding fayres around West Cumbria. She loves talking to people and hearing their extravagant or unusual plans about their up and coming big day! Jaime loves sharing their excitement, helping to select their perfect rings from our Brown and Newirth Wedding ring collection and giving her own advice. It wasn’t so long ago she planned her own wedding and enjoyed a fantastic honeymoon in the Dominican Republic which was well deserved after not having a holiday for over 7 years!

Jaime has also experienced some fantastic events during her time with the company. Some of her favourites were ladies Night at Carlisle Race Course where the team gave out a ‘diamond card’. One of these cards actually contained a real diamond and the winner got to have this set into a piece of jewellery.

Behind the scenes Jaime has had some fantastic opportunities while on training days and trips with our brands. She has visited many of the watch houses service centres including Tag Heuer and training days spent learning in depth product knowledge to share with you.

She also looks forward to the famous Peter Jackson Christmas Parties. Each year our Christmas party has a different theme which we only find out a few weeks before. Jaime’s favourite so far was the medieval Christmas party because the guests all wore fancy dress, there was no cutlery allowed and if you tried to use cutlery a red-hot poker was put into your drink!

Interests outside of work

 

Jaime has an artistic flare which shows through her other hobbies such as calligraphy, card making and cross stitch. Giving her an eye for style and design which is perfectly suited to helping people select their ideal pieces of jewellery.

Jaime has a very close bond with her family which is even shown through her treasured Links of London bracelet. Each charm on it represents someone from past or present from a police hat to a bat (private joke). It is a really sentimental piece that she wears daily alongside her treasured engagement and wedding ring. However next on her list to own is a diamond set Tag Heuer link watch something she has aspired to own for a while. She loves the new design and with a special birthday around the corner she is hoping it may appear this year!

The MoD announcement from Bremont

Coming out of another successful ‘Townhouse’ in London, Bremont have announced many exciting new lines to add to their already impressive collections, but one new collection of watches has got the whole watch and jewellery industry talking.

Bremont proudly announced that they are entering into a partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) honouring Her Majesty’s Armed Forces to create the ‘Armed Forces Collection’. This three-piece collection will be the first time that a civilian will be able to purchase an official Bremont Military timepiece.

 

What to expect from the Armed Forces Collection

Over many years Bremont have worked closely with the armed forces to produce many specially commissioned projects at the request of personnel from all branches of the British armed forces. Bremont’s reputation for producing products that are ‘tested beyond endurance’ is what makes their watches widely recognised as the go-to product for the military.

Supplying products that are fit for purpose is key, but Bremont have been recognised for their discretion and patriotism. Nick English, who co- founded the brand in 2002 with his brother Giles stated on the press release regarding this new partnership, “It is difficult to think of a more significant recognition that has been received by Bremont in the 12 years since we sold our first watch.”

Harking back to the historical past of the British military, Bremont have drawn inspiration from the original ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches as the focal point for the three new designs. We love selling products that have a story and Bremont tell the best stories in the business.

 

The Dirty Dozen

During World War 2, Britain’s Ministry of Defence commissioned a series of wristwatches to be issued to the British Army. Strict specification was needed for the timing to be of chronometer standard, as well as being robust in the casing that also included water proofing. One of the other key features was the need for luminous markers and with all of these features the Dirty Dozen were created, with 12 different watch brands each producing their version of the needed watch.

There are believed to be around only 20 original complete sets in the world, this is one of the most famed collection of watches in existence. You may also recognise the name from the 1960’s film The Dirty Dozen, which depicts the misadventures of 12 fictional soldiers from the war.

Taking inspiration from the designs of the original 1940’s models, Bremont have developed a new, more traditional two-piece case that features a screw in case back, that itself will show-case the collective badges of all three of the MoD services; the first ever watches to do so. Each watch manufactured in Henley-on-Thames will represent one branch of the military with nuances in design that the British watch company are famed for, that will appeal to both military personnel and civilians alike.

 

The Bremont Broadsword

Manufactured to the original specification of the British Army, the ‘Broadsword’ is the closest in looks to the Dirty Dozen with a sub-seconds hand sitting 6 o’clock. Simple white numerals are paired with C1 Super-LumiNova® dots and finished hands to enhance the viewing in low light. The Bremont Arrow

A mono-pusher chronograph is the distinguishing feature of the ‘Arrow’. The chronograph functionality is a necessity for any timed mission with this timepiece being aimed at the airman. The chronometer rated BE-51AE movement is fitted in a 42mm hardened steel case with the chronograph operated with just the one pusher that will start, stop and reset the stopwatch.

We love the RAF blue sailcloth strap that provides a touch of colour in the most fitting way. The tone of blue is recognisable to those in the know and an aspect that we feel will be loved by many RAF aficionados. The single pusher chronograph is a great old-school feature for a watch that should be used more and with this watch priced at £3595, the Arrow will rank well in the luxury watch market due its superb features great price.

 

The Bremont Argonaut

The diver of the three, being water resistant to 300 metres, the ‘Argonaut’ is the Naval inspired piece with its name taken from Greek mythology and synonymous with Navy history having appeared on commissioned ships for close to 250 years. Apart from the water resistance, the other key feature to this watch is the readability, especially the highly legible orange minute hand with minutes being so critical in the marine environment.

Bremont have produced many watches that feature the inner rotating bezel operated by the 4 o’clock crown, this feature is one that has proved to be popular among Bremont fans, as it adds an element of difference from so many watches that exhibit an external rotating bezel. Priced at £2795, the Argonaut is a handsome, very wearable diving watch at just 42mm in case size.

 

Outro

Expanding collections is a big undertaking for any watch brand, but I feel the reason to expand should be due to demand and inspiring concepts. A watch of any price let alone one in the luxury market should tell a story and therefore the story give the brand reason to produce a new collection. As a consumer who has bought into a luxury product, it is great to talk about the product and explain its existence and why it differentiates from any other product out there, I genuinely feel that Bremont products do this really well.

Bremont with this proud partnership have the perfect excuse to expand their range and tell a story and capitalise on their military experience. The military watches that they produce for many militias all over the world is a big part of their business, but for a British brand a seal of approval from the MoD is something very special.

Love anchor

The collection that holds many symbols, the Love Anchor collection is what we anticipate will be the best gift giving collection for 2019. Throughout the collection you will find anchors and compasses with stunning filigree designs paired with a maritime feel. “Love, Faith and Hope” engravings represent the traditional symbolic sense of the designs. With these kind of sentiments, whether in engraved representations or symbolically designed, the perfect gift for your nearest and dearest can be found.

Our champion piece from the Love Anchor collection is by some standards a simple design, but we feel that sometimes simplicity is not the obvious choice and choice that works so well, but when you analyse this beautiful compass you can see there is far more detail than you first thought. Decorated by hand the stone embellishment is paired with the “Love, Faith, Hope” engraving. The compass is crafted in a feminine way described by Thomas Sabo as to show the way to love.

Our Thomas Sabo boutique is staffed with young vibrant people who have a passion for the brand and are thrilled to see the latest collection that will build the displays and theme of the store for the next few months. Courtney who has been with us since the launch of this store has chosen the large dragonfly as her favourite.

“ I particularly love the silver dragonfly, the colourful elements are perfect for summer time and I love to change the length of my pendants wearing them both short and at longer lengths, to match my different outfits, which this piece will do perfectly. Wearing the latest jewellery at work is certainly one my favourite parts of the job.”

Zoe, our newest member of the team has championed the beautiful Bee pieces for this season. “If I was pushed to choose what I love the most then I would choose the Bee set! Because a full set is better than one-piece jewellery. It’s really cute, I like the daintiness and the gold tones and the symbol of happiness that the bee represents.”

In January 2019, Tag Heuer unveiled their latest revolutionary timepiece at the Salon international de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The timepiece, Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T Tourbillon Nanograph is limited to only 500 timepieces worldwide with less than 20 available in the UK.

 

This innovative development in tourbillon technology has got all watch aficionados excited thanks to Tag Heuer’s ‘avant-garde’ approach to design which with this watch, has exclusively incorporated a never seen before carbon hairspring.

 

Where has the Nanograph’s name come from?

 

 

Carbon is a highly sustainable material which is also extremely lightweight, this is a result of its molecular structure which resembles many joined hexagonal shapes. These shapes are one million times smaller than a millimetre – nanoscopic! The carbon hairspring, crafted for the first time ever by mathematicians, physicists and chemists has been constructed to withstand shocks, magnetic fields and extreme temperatures.

 

Second to the cutting-edge hairspring, a tourbillion movement is found at the heart of the timepiece. French for whirlwind, the tourbillion movement is arguably one of the most complex movements to craft by hand into a watch.

 

Why is the tourbillon movement so monumental?

Invented by British clockmaker Thomas Mudge in 1755; the escapement is what holds the most delicate yet important pieces of any mechanical watch including the pallet fork, balance wheel and hairspring. In a normal mechanical timepiece, this escapement is fixed which subjects the balance wheel to the effects of gravity and varies timekeeping dependant on the position of the watch.

 

Dissimilarly the tourbillons escapement is contained within a rotating cage. The cage allows the movement to enjoy a range of constant motion which effects cancel out any timing variations no matter what position the watch is in.

 

Prestige is the one of many words that come to mind when I think about this mechanism; which paired with a carbon hairspring allows this timepiece to contend for the most precise mechanical watch on the current market.

 

The Design

 

 

Paying tribute to the inspiring carbon molecular structure, a hexagonal pattern is devoured on the watch’s multi-layered dial, movement and oscillating mass. The hexagons are varied in colour from being sandblasted or fine brushed creating a beautiful mosaic composition.

 

The neon green glow electrifying the timepiece acknowledges the brazen heritage of the Carrera; driven by motor racing the Carrera was established by Jack Heuer, the great-grandson of Edouard Tag Heuer’s founder. The Carrera was named after Mexico’s most recognised race La Carrera PanAmerica after Jack took interest in the world of racing, particularly the world-famous Rodriguez brothers; Ricardo and Pedro.

 

Neon green complements the tourbillon movement along with hand and chronograph markers, pushbutton and stitching on the black calfskin leather which has a rubber reverse for extreme wearing comfort.

 

A tribute to the carbon hairspring is resembled in the tachymeter, case lugs and the deployment buckle which present a stunning design across the pieces.

The lavish aura of the Nanograph is enhanced through the complex technology ingrained throughout this extravagant model.
